As it is known, the economy of the region is based
on Agriculture. It is the back bone of the regional
economy accounting for more than 90 percent of
the total employment and contributes more than
73% to regional GDP. The region is endowed with
wide- ranging climatic conditions and resource
bases which support several farming systems. Due
to this all types of Cereals, Fiber Crops, Oil
seeds, fruits, vegetables, Peas, Beans, Ground
nuts , Sunflowers. Beverage crops (tea and coffee)
Spices, Clove, CardaMom, Ginger, Black pepper,
hell and herbs, Horticulture: Citrus, Banana,
Mongo, Papaya, Avocado, Pineapple and industrial
crops like cotton are widely grown in the region.

| Livestock
potentials |
The
region is also known for its high potential of
live stock population. According to the regional
statistical abstract in 2007, the live stock population
has been estimated 29,017,551, out of it cattle
accounted to 11,285,450, sheep 3,618,802, Goat
3,927,205 & 7,806,800 Poultry.
Industrial and Agro- Industrial Opportunities
The regional State has great potential for the
development of resource and market base industries.
In this regard about 700 Industrial project ideas
are identified, out of them 300 project profiles
are prepared by IPS (Industrial project studies).

| Tourism |
| The
Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional
State is endowed with magnificent tourist attractions,
which are classified as Natural, Historical and
cultural attractions. Natural attractions include
natural forests, mountains, Rivers, lakes, water
falls, hot springs, endemic mammalian and bird
species. Some of historical attractions are the
Ancient monasteries, mosques, stealer, caves and
forests, rock and wooden arts. The anthropological
sites of Debub Omo, Burji and Konso are also among
the major historical attractions found in the
region. As he region has over 56 ethnic compositions,
it has diverse cultural attractions where each
of them has its own culture reflected by hair
style, body decoration, dressing, wearing jewelers
and ways of life like wedding, funeral and dramatic
traditional like:-
- Rival stick fighting by Mursi and Surma tribes
locally called "Donga"
- The "jumping of the bull” ceremonies

| Omo
River only has potential to produce 36,560 mega
watt electric power. More over, there are 26 small
rivers with the potential of more than 111.5 Mega
watt electric power. |

There are some precious minerals and construction
materials in different parts of the region, such
as gold, coal, white and red stone, ignimbrite,
volcanic ash, and black sand granite, lignite,
carbonic shell, lime stone, diatomite coalmine,
marble and mineral water. |

|
There are so many incentives that are granted
to investors who are engaged in different investment
projects at regional level such as:
- Exemption from the payment of custom duties
-Tax holidays for some types of development projects.
- Priority in delivering investment sites for
some selected projects
- Rendering investment services under "one
–stop-
shop service"
To enhance investment in the region, some selected
projets have got an advantage to own urban land
free of charge. Those projects are as follows.

As
a whole, the southern nations, nationalities and
peoples region has a huge potential to increase
the product and productivity of all sectors of
the economy. Ethiopia has signed multilateral
and bilateral investment promotion and protection
agreements with many countries. Ethiopia is a
member and a signatory of the World Bank affiliated
multilateral investment guarantee agency (MIGA)
and a signatory of the international convention
on settlement of investment Disputes (ICSID) so
as these all guarantees are conducive to encourage
foreign and local investors.
The regional government supportive polices, rules
and regulations, incentives, adequate guarantee
and protection, infrastructural facilities have
accelerated the inflow of projects from year to
