Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR)
is among the widest and most populous regions of the
country. Its most body lies in the East African rift
valley, where there are surprisingly unique scenarios
such as lakes, national parks and certified man-made
and natural antiquities. Apart from a number of endemic
fauna and flora, 56 hospitable nations and nationalities
with their fascinating diverse cultures reside in the
region.

Besides all these blessings, the region
has multi-faceated economic and social problems. The
regional government acknowledges that due to the existence
of deep rooted poverty in the region, the direction
and implementation tools carved out to address the problem
so far were promising.
However, the problem could not be addressed
by the government alone. Hence we realize that the private
sector should play its utmost part in the economic and
social development endeavors of the region to get out
of the poverty.
Our economic policy and development
strategy clearly stipulate the necessity and importance
of enhancing private investment by supporting the activity
of the private sector. We also realize that it is important
to raise the efficiency ofprivate investors through
our capacity building programmes.

We do
have an incentive mechanism to private investors who
venture on various spheres such as agricultural investment
projects.
To facilitate
the activities of private investors, the regional government
has embarked on the construction and upgrading of road
networks. All towns and most of the rural villagesin
the region have access to telecommunication and electric
supply services. Implementation of the various civil
service programmes has created conducive conditions
that enable private investors to get one stop shoping
services. We are keen to continuously scrutinize our
service delivery to satisfy the needs and demands of
private investors.
Generally
for the faster economic growth and development we already
planned, the private sector is indispensable. We can
effectively implement our Plan for the Accelerated and
Sustained Development to end Poverty (PASDEP) only when
domestic and foreign direct investors came and take
part in the development process.
Finally,
on behalf of the regional government and myself, I would
like to assure you that all necessary support would
be provided to promote and enhance private sector investment
in SNNPR.
